Verbal analogies: six worked stems

Lessons · ~8 min read

Name the relationship first, then pick. Original practice items with why each trap is wrong.

Before you start

Analogies are relationship questions wearing vocabulary clothes. Before you touch options, force a short link: type of, tool for, opposite, part of, cause. If you cannot say the link, you are sniffing for familiar words — and that is how easy marks disappear.

These six stems are original teaching items. They are not copied from any commercial book or commission paper. Sit with a pencil; cover the explanation until you have picked.

1. Needle : Sew :: Pen : ?

  1. Ink
  2. WriteAnswer
  3. Paper
  4. Desk

Why

Needle is the tool used to sew. Pen is the tool used to write. Ink is associated but is the material, not the action. Paper is the surface. Desk is the workplace.

2. Teacher : School :: Doctor : ?

  1. Medicine
  2. HospitalAnswer
  3. Patient
  4. Stethoscope

Why

Person to workplace. Medicine is the field, patient is the client, stethoscope is a tool. Only hospital matches school as the place of work.

3. Hot : Cold :: Tall : ?

  1. High
  2. ShortAnswer
  3. Giant
  4. Thin

Why

Opposites. High and giant sit near “tall” but do not reverse it. Thin is a different axis (width, not height).

4. Wheel : Car :: Page : ?

  1. Library
  2. Author
  3. BookAnswer
  4. Ink

Why

Part to whole. A wheel is a part of a car; a page is a part of a book. Library contains books; author creates; ink is material.

5. Rain : Flood :: Spark : ?

  1. Water
  2. FireAnswer
  3. Cloud
  4. Matchbox

Why

Cause to possible result. Heavy rain can lead to flood; a spark can lead to fire. Water and cloud belong to the rain family, not the spark family.

6. Bee : Hive :: Bird : ?

  1. Sky
  2. NestAnswer
  3. Feather
  4. Tree

Why

Creature to dwelling. Sky is habitat-at-large, feather is a part, tree is a possible location of a nest — not the dwelling itself.

After this page

If you missed more than two, restart from the link sentence, not from vocabulary lists. Tomorrow, invent three stems of your own with the same six relationship types. That retrieval step beats rereading this page.

Put a clock on it

Same skills, timed sample, no answer key in the first HTML of the quiz itself.
